Solar panels: a replacement for the humble battery?

by Martin on March 3, 2010

Solar panels have long been touted as a solution for the world’s energy needs. Batteries – even the most efficient and effective types – generate waste (some of which can be dangerous to the environment), and even rechargeable batteries consume power from the central grid which is typically generated by carbon-generating fossil fuels.

Solar panels, on the other hand generate power from one of the plentiful energy sources we have on earth – sunlight. However, thus far technology has not yet managed to unlock the full energy potential of this natural power source. Although progress is being made – with British scientists leading the way in this area, there is still a long way to go before solar power is being harnessed truly effectively.
