Digital camera batteries

Digital camera batteries have to be able to cope with the high power requirements of modern digital cameras, with their energy-hungry LCD screens and sophisticated image processing features.

Due to this high power demand, most digital camera batteries are proprietary formats built to the manufacturer’s required specification. Lithium ion batteries are most commonly used to power digital cameras, as they are able to pack a great deal of power into a very small space.

However, some types of digital camera do use off-the-shelf batteries, usually AA batteries. If your digital camera uses these batteries, investing in some rechargeable batteries and a good charger is a very good idea.

Off-the -shelf digital camera batteries
With the growing popularity of digital photography, many battery manufacturers have now started to offer off-the-shelf digital camera batteries which are specifically designed to handle the special requirements of modern digital cameras.

These batteries – usually in either AA or AAA format – tend to be lithium-based rather than NiMH or NiCad batteries, and are better able to cope with the high power drain of digital cameras.

The digital camera batteries produced by these manufacturers do indeed last longer than normal batteries, but in general off-the-shelf digital camera batteries will not perform as well as custom-made batteries.
