12 volt batteries

Used in cars and other vehicles, 12 volt batteries are designed to be easily recharged and can be stored for long periods of time when not in use.

A 12 volt battery controls the ignition in the car, and is then gradually recharged by the engine driven system. If the battery goes flat, it can be jump started by connecting it to a fully charged 12 volt battery.

To ensure that a car battery lasts as long as it possibly can, there are some handy tips to remember. These include:

•    Keep the battery charged, as sulfation can occur when 12 volt batteries are not charged.
•    Apply a topping charge every six months as this can improve performance.
•    Ideally, use 80 per cent depth of discharge. A full cycle can cause wear to the battery.
•    Ensure the battery is fully charged when storing it. You should also charge it periodically, as batteries lose charge even when not in use.

Although they are much larger, 12 volt batteries work in much the same way as smaller batteries.

12 volt batteries in vehicles
Apart from cars, there are many other vehicles which are powered by 12 volt batteries. These include vehicles like motorcycles and boats where the battery powers the ignition system. However there are also vehicles where the battery is the main power source. These include:

•    Golf carts.
•    Milk floats.
•    Electric cars.

The 12 volt battery is amazingly versatile and can last a long time if looked after properly.
