Batteries – where would we be without them?

Batteries produce electricity through a chemical reaction between their components. The battery inventor, Alessandro Volta, developed the first, known as the voltaic pile, in 1800, and the science has been improved and expanded over the years to give us the vast range of batteries and battery-run products available today, which have transformed the way we live and created a major worldwide industry.

With a battery to hand, there’s no need to be connected to an electrical socket, and all those trailing wires, so many of our appliances can move with us. Imagine a world without mobile phones, torches … hearing aids!

The technology develops

From the first battery, the voltaic pile, continuing development has given us a large number of battery types. And as the science progresses, and battery size reduces, more and more of our everyday tools now use this power source and so are ‘mobile’. A major advance has been the rechargeable battery, which reduces running costs and adds to convenience, as well as being better for the environment.
